One of the most interesting facts about the university is that its motto, ‘bear down’, came into being after the unfortunate and untimely death of the student body president named John ‘Button’ Salmon. Salmon died as a result of a car accident. The student body president and football player was the only person in the accident to suffer life-threatening injuries. Before his death in 1926, he called for his coach, “Pop” McKale, and asked him to pass a couple of words down to his teammates. He asked Pop to ask them to ‘bear it down’ and hence, the famous UA motto was born. On this day, there is even a gymnasium on the campus which is called the Bear Down Gymnasium. The words ‘Bear Down’ written on the roof of the gymnasium are known to be the inspiration behind UA’s fight song. Hence, the student body UA president had given more to the University of Arizona than just a few glorious years.
