So, let’s find a bit about each of the two mountains.Mount Elbert is currently the highest summit of Colorado, and it has been named after Samuel Elbert, a former governor of Colorado who served between 1873-1874. He was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln to the Colorado Territory when the governor of Colorado was John Evans. Later, Elbert went on to marry the daughter of Evans and later also served in the Supreme Court of Colorado. Mount Elbert is also the highest point of the Mississippi River drainage basin. We cannot really say that there was someone who discovered the peak, as the territory has been used by the Native Americans for a long time. But, Henry W. Stuckle is said to have been the first person to ascent the high summit of Mount Elbert in 1874. Even after being quite a high peak, Mount Elbert is known as the gentle giant and is quite popular among mountaineers. The popular routes are placed on ‘Class 1’ to ‘Class 2’ of the Yosemite Decimal System. The Black Cloud Trail is thought to be the most difficult main route to reach the summit of this mountain. The second-highest mountain of Colorado is Mount Massive. By the very name, you can understand that the peak is known for its huge size. Henry Gannett is said to be the first person to ascend this peak during the Hayden Survey that took place in 1873. Just like the former peak, this territory was also used by the Native Americans, so there is no specific discoverer of the mountain. This mountain has an elongated shape and has five summits. Along with that, it covers more area above 14,000 ft (4,300 m) than any of the other mountains present in the 48 contiguous states. Similarly, Mount Whitney is taken to be the highest point of the lower 48 contiguous states having a height of around 14,494 ft (4,417.7 m) and it’s situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Both the peaks are situated quite close to each other, with a distance of about 5 mi (8 km). One of the most notable things about Mount Massive has to be the glacial lakes present in the wilderness area. And, the treeline begins just below 12,000 ft (3,657 m).Height Of The Two Highest Peaks In ColoradoWhen it comes to height, Mount Elbert leads by having a height of 14,440 ft (4401.2 m) while Mount Massive is pretty close with a height of 14,428 ft (4,398 m).During the Great Depression, there had been a doubt about the heights of these mountains, which led to the reassessment of the heights. Before that, Mount Elbert was placed at a height of 14,433 ft (4,399 m), which was later adjusted to the measurement used today. The change was officially noted as late as during the North American Vertical Datum of 1988. This has led to popular myths that Mount Massive supporters used to pile up stones on top of the mountain to make it higher, while the Mount Elbert supporters used to topple them. The most interesting thing is that there’s only a difference of 12 ft (3.7 m) between the heights of these two peaks.Did You Know…Here are some of the facts about the mountains in Colorado that you need to know.Among the whole stretch of the Rocky Mountains spreading from the northern side of British Columbia, Canada, to southern New Mexico, Colorado contains the most number of highest peaks.
