Philip J.Currie discovered Machairasaurus skeletons in an expedition between 1988 - 1990. The skeletons were discovered in the Bayan Mandahu Formation of inner Mongolia (China). The fossils that were discovered in Bayan Mandahu in inner Mongolia are the only two specimens of this genus.Currie, Nicholas R. Longrich, and Dong Zimming named the genus Machairasaurus and the type species was named Machairasaurus leptonychus. Machairasaurus is derived from a Greek word meaning ‘slender claw....
