Sarcolestes specimen was discovered by Paleontologist Alfred Nicholas Leeds and the type species was named after him by Richard Lydekker in 1893. The fossils were found in Oxford Clay, England. The fossils that were discovered only consisted of the lower jaw of the dinosaur. There was one tooth and two tips of crowns found in this jaw. Richard Lydekker had first classified this dinosaur as a Theropod in the Thecodontosauridae group. Later, Sarcolestes was discovered to be a herbivore and was placed in the Nodosauridae group.Because less of the fossils were found, the classification and existence of the Sarcolestes genus are doubted by others in this field.
