There is a genus of sauropods called Cedarosaurus found in the North American region. The sauropod Cedarosaurus was a herbivorous species from the Early Cretaceous Period. The species was known to be found in the region of present-day Utah, USA. The fossils of the sauropod Cedarosaurus have been found in areas such as Texas and Colorado. The species first discovered by Tidwell, K. Carpenter, and Brooks in 1999 has a lot of similarities to the brachiosaurid Eucamerotus from the Wessex Formation of southern England. Similarities are also found with Brachiosaurus from the Morrison Formation.Cedarosaurus is named after the Cedar Mountain Formation in eastern Utah, USA. The height of the species ensured that they fed on tall vegetation from the tree canopy. The skeleton found in the Cedar Mountains by Tidwell, Carpenter, and Brooks from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in the 1990s lacked the head, neck, and many other parts of the body. In 2001, there was a study that 115 gastroliths were discovered in association with a new sauropod specimen called Cedaeosaurus. Discovery on this Cretaceous period dinosaurs was done by Frank Sanders, Kim Manley, and K Carpenter. The gastroliths were identified using many different criteria discussed further in the article.  These dinosaurs from the Lower Cretaceous epoch of history are quite popular as they have been seen enacted in feature films and books alike. Adults of this species were known to lay eggs during reproduction. Adults have a more gracile ulna and radius than the related sauropod dinosaurs Venenosaurus. The species Venenosaurus of the Lower Cretaceous Period in history had lateral fossae which were fairly unusual. The lateral fossae looked like deep depressions in the outside walls of the vertebral centra. Some are even divided into two different chambers by a ridge which makes the shape look like a depression. For more related content, check out these Fabrosaurus facts and Preondactylus fun facts for kids.

Cedarosaurus Interesting FactsHow do you pronounce ‘Cedarosaurus’?The pronunciation of these Early Cretaceous Sauropod called Cedarosaurus is ‘sadar-ro-so-ras’. It is similar to how one pronounces Cedar of the Cedar Mountain. What type of dinosaur was a Cedarosaurus?Cedarosaurus is a terrestrial species of dinosaurs first found in the Cedar Mountain formation by Tidwell, Carpenter, and Brooks. The meaning of the name is Cedar lizard. In which geological period did the Cedarosaurus roam the earth? The dinosaurs were known to live in the region of existence in the present-day USA in the Early Cretaceous Period. When did the Cedarosaurus become extinct? The Cedarosaurus dinosaur was known to have existed 129.4 million years ago.Where did a Cedarosaurus live? The Cedarosaurus dinosaur was said to be present in a range of different regions and habitats in North America. Known locations of the sauropod dinosaur are‭ ‬Texas‭ ‬-‭ ‬Paluxy Formation and in ‬Utah‭ ‬-‭ ‬Cedar Mountain Formation‭, both in the USA.Fossils were discovered in the Cedar Mountain Formation and the species was first described by Tidwell, Carpenter, and Brooks in the year 1999.What was a Cedarosaurus’ habitat? This was a terrestrial species and was always found foraging and living on the ground. They were found in well-forested regions.Who did a Cedarosaurus live with?No information is available on the company of these Cedarosaurus dinosaurs. However, it is believed that, like all sauropods, the Cedarosaurus also lives in herds to protect their young. How long did a Cedarosaurus live? The life span of the species was not known. How did they reproduce? This was an egg-laying dinosaur and this is how the animals used to reproduce.Cedarosaurus Fun FactsWhat did a Cedarosaurus look like?Cedarosaurus dinosaurs were known to be at least 46 ft (14.02 m) long. They have been estimated to be at least 80,000-100,000 lb (36,000-45,000 kg). The bone structure of the species says otherwise as it indicates lower weight due to bones. The dinosaurs had a more gracile ulna and radius when compared to Venenosaurus. When the vertebrae are aligned, the middle tail vertebrae’s neural spines are angled anteriorly. The vertebrae are similar to Gondwanatitan, Venenosaurus, and Aeolosaurus. The vertebrae and limbs closely resemble those of English brachiosaurs. This was a medium-sized sauropod found deep inside forests. It was said to be very agile for its shape and size. Despite being heavy and bulky, the species was known to be able to move around freely. The fossils found is a proof of that. The species were also able to swing their neck while moving. It is a brachiosaurid, a part of a tall-necked macronarian sauropod, that lived throughout the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous periods.115 clasts or gastroliths in the stomach region were worn smooth. This was done by internal grinding and acid-etching similar to other sauropods. These small stones or gastroliths actually contain fossils of small plants and invertebrates. Earlier these gastroliths were only known from diplodocids until it was found that brachiosaurs also swallowed stones to grind food. How many bones did a Cedarosaurus have? The number of bones in the dinosaurs is not known. The skeletons found were not complete. The skull, neck and a few other parts are still missing. How did they communicate? They probably communicated by voice and tactically. More information regarding is not available. How big was a Cedarosaurus? The estimated size of the Cedarosaurus is around 46 ft (14.02 m). There is no concrete evidence of this, but it is derived from the skeletons found of the species. It is said to be a medium-sized sauropod. How fast could a Cedarosaurus move?Don’t go by the big size of the species as the structure suggests that the dinosaurs were pretty quick and could travel long distances without getting tired. The speed was not as fast as some other predators of that time, however, they were pretty speedy for a big beast. How much did a Cedarosaurus weigh? The estimated weight of the Cedarosaurus was set as 80,000-100,000 lb (36,000-45,000 kg). However, the bones of the species were quite light and people believe they would have been lighter than the weight given. What were the male and female names of the species? There is no information of different names given to the male and female species of the Cedarosaurus. What would you call a baby Cedarosaurus? The name of the baby of a Cedarosaurus is not known. What did they eat? They were herbivores and were known to feed on tall vegetation from the tree canopies. The body structure of the species allowed them to do this. How aggressive were they? There is no information about the behavior of the Cedarosaurus. However, they would have aggressive if provoked like other species of dinosaurs.Did you know…When a Cedarosaurus specimen was checked in 2001, 115 gastroliths were discovered and Frank Sanders, Kim Manley, and K Carpenter published a study on this. The stones found were termed as gastroliths by the partial matrix support, tight spatial distribution, and an edge-on orientation indicative of the stones being deposited when the body still had soft tissue. These were found within a 0.20 ft (0.06 m) space in the stomach region of the skeleton. Some were spherical in shape, while others had an irregular shape and the total weight of the gastroliths was around 15 lb (6.8 kg). These were probably not ingested out of accident as some are very large. This states that the species was not selective about the shape of the gastroliths.Who was the predator of the Cedarosaurus? The information on the predators of the Cedarosaurus is unavailable. What does Cedarosaurus mean?Cedarosaurus is named after the Cedar Mountain Formation where it was first found. The meaning of the word is Cedar lizard. Here at Kidadl, we have carefully created lots of interesting family-friendly dinosaur facts for everyone to discover!
