A King of his time had sat on the throne to commit crimes untold, leaving people of his reign answerable for his wrongdoing. The kingdom failed to compensate for the felonies of their former ruler. This incompetence angered the goddess named Hera, for she decided to make the people of this land pay. Thus, Hera sent the Sphinx to plunge Thebes into a pit of plague. The Great Sphinx was not a work of art then, it was an entity rather, with a woman’s head and inhumane body. Somewhere near the land of Thebes, the Sphinx rested upon a cliff, awaiting visitors who wished to go into the kingdom it stood guarding. Muses had taught the Sphinx a riddle, and the latter used this riddle to trick any mortal who desired passing. The riddle went down in history as a question that asks to identify that what walks on four legs, then two, and then three. There was no one capable of breaking past the riddle, and every one of these people, unable to think of the right answer, was taken by the Sphinx. History believes that the Sphinx ate all those who could not answer it, the remnants scattered around her territory were evidence enough.Then came Oedipus, the only man to have answered the Sphinx’s puzzle. The answer was a man, for humans started as babies crawling on all fours, moving on to walk on two feet, and traveled with a cane in the last years of their life. The Sphinx embraced death, throwing itself off the cliff, and with it died the plague veiling Thebes.Degradation And ViolationUnfortunately for the world, the Great Sphinx has fallen with the passing of time.Today, the Sphinx is not what it used to be. Over the years, the statute has experienced gradual stages of deterioration. For a long time now, the Sphinx’s nose has been gone. While some theories like to blame Napoleon and his cannon for the absent portion of the Great Sphinx, others oppose these claims by declaring that evidence suggests the nose has been missing since before Napoleon’s time. While the face appears to not have suffered extreme damage, the body of the Sphinx continues to worsen because of erosion. As the world continues to grow and time marches forward, the Sphinx only crumbles, owing to the pollution, humidity, and wind that duvets the atmosphere blanketing it.Efforts to preserve this historically significant monument are being made even today, but the state of the Sphinx remains unpromising still.Great Sphinx RestorationThe Great Sphinx is valuable not only to the Ancient Egyptians who brought it to life, but it is a wonder that the world as a whole appreciates and wishes to preserve.The earliest attempt known to the accounts goes back to the New Kingdom. This came to be termed the ‘Phase I Restoration’. King Tuthmosis VI and the craftsmen of his empire had greatly employed slabs of limestone to repair the Sphinx statue, for he had stationed his stela in the Sphinx’s paws. The restoration slabs employed by Phase I of King Tuthmosis VI are credited for bringing the enormous boulders of bedrock that had parted from the Sphinx’s body back to their original position and holding them there.Then followed the Ramesses restoration which came to be known as the ‘Phase II’ restoration. Identical to what the craftsmen of King Tuthmosis VI had done, the Ramesses also tended to the Sphinx body by opting for limestone slabs. However, the Phase III restoration, stemming from the 26th Dynasty, snagged the title for effective revamps. Phase III learned from what had gone wrong in Phase I and Phase II restorations and refined these faults accordingly.Therefore, since the begging of its time, attempts to keep the statue of the Giza Sphinx protected and mended had been made since the beginning of this wonder.Giza Plateau In Cairo, EgyptThe Giza Plateau is in Egypt, more specifically on the fringes of Cairo.The plateau of Giza in Egypt is home to more than just the desert climate, scarce vegetation, and sandy terrain. It is marked by the Great Sphinx, a regal statue that adorns Egypt. What makes the thought behind this humungous work of pure art is that it faces the rising sun, so every time the first crack of dawn breaks past the clouds, it tints the great statue in a golden light. Geological evidence suggests that the Great pyramid is located not too far from the Sphinx. The Giza Plateau of Egypt, however, is home to much more than pyramids, for it holds significant temples on its mystic land. At a short distance from Khafre’s pyramid complex, stands the beautifully torn remnant of the Khafre Valley Temple, inside which a French Archaeologist named Auguste Mariette had discovered a mighty statue of the Pharaoh himself. A south wall had been found and hinted at the existence of the causeway linking the two since before the Sphinx. Not only this, but Mariette had also explored a broken trail that led to a mortuary temple, a neighbor of Khafre’s pyramid.
