Moths are flying creatures which are classified under the same order as butterflies whose members can be identified by their characteristic scaly wings. They are nocturnal creatures that can be prominently seen in the natural environment around us and are often found annoying by humans as they are extremely attracted to artificial lights and are often out of control with their flying. Can these creatures annoy humans by biting them?Yes and no. Moths are known to eat nectar and most of them do not bite. But some species, the exceptions, do take occasional pleasure in biting people and causing a painful sting (ouch!). Moths have tubular and long biting mouthparts, known as proboscis, which have a unique shape that allows them to easily suck flower nectar. Adults are not dangerous but larvae (caterpillars) can cause stings. Read on to learn more about this pest and if it can cause any harm to humans or pets.If you enjoy this article, why not also read about what do moths eat and different types of moths here on Kidadl? Can and will moths bite humans? The answer to this is quite complicated. Adult moths of a wide range of species do not bite people, but there are some moths that can cause painful stings. Moths that do not bite people feed upon nectar from flowers. They utilize their narrow and long mouthpart known as a proboscis to suck nectar. Most adult moths that we commonly see flying around do not have the ability to bite people. Most adults do not possess any mouths and cannot bite anything. However, there are a few exceptions. The genus Calyptra moths, which are also commonly known as fruit-piercing moths and vampire moths, possess a proboscis that is a long feeding tube along with small projections. This tube can pierce through the skin of a human and suck blood.Adult moths do not eat clothes. However, they are known to lay eggs in clothes. They lay eggs in fabrics and moth larvae feed upon fabrics until they attain maturity. Moths undergo the process of metamorphosis. They are brought into this world as larvae, also known as caterpillars, and then later develop wings. These caterpillars are the reason behind holes you may discover in your clothing items. Caterpillars are able to eat clothing and their stings can also cause irritation to the human skin. They are not capable of bites. If clothes fed upon by moths are becoming a regular and frequent thing, pest control must be called as there might be an infestation. To prevent moths from entering a home, clothes must be washed before entering the house if the person feels they were in close proximity to moths. Natural fiber-made clothes such as fur and wool must be brushed. To prevent clothes with holes caused by moth larvae (caterpillars), they must be washed and stored away in a dry and air-tight container, or preferably a cedar chest. Clothes must be protected if there is a moth infestation at home. Cedarwood proves to be helpful in this situation as the cedar oil present in it is known to repel moths. Storing clothes in a cedar chest can keep moths away. Most moths do not bite, but it is better to keep them away from the house so as to prevent allergic reactions, contamination to food, and harm to clothes. Are moths poisonous?Adult moths of the majority of species are not able to bite people and are certainly not poisonous. They can prove to be poisonous only if eaten, especially if the caterpillar or adult moth possessed spines or hairs. Adult moths cannot cause harm to people in many ways but there are certain conditions and symptoms one needs to know. A skin condition, known as Lepidopterism, is believed to be linked with butterfly and moth caterpillars. Some moths possess small spiny hairs that are present to protect themselves from predators. These hairs can pierce through the skin. Even though they do not cause significant pain, red bumps will appear which can sting and burn for a couple of minutes.Moth caterpillars of some species have their spines coated with toxic venom. Thus, exposure to the spines of these caterpillars is not harmless. Pets like cats and dogs have a knack for pursuing these creatures. Fortunately, no risk is posed to cats by moth species or butterflies. However, there are always exceptions; some exotic caterpillars can be harmful. The Garden Tiger adult moth as well as the caterpillar can prove to be lethal if consumed. Similar to cats, creatures like termites, moths, flies, and grasshoppers pose no risk to dogs. However, moth larvae are capable of contaminating food. Thus, dog food must be kept sealed and away from the reach of moths as moth larvae ingestion can lead to problems in the intestine.Do moths carry disease?Moths are irritating creatures that are known for eating dried foods and clothes. However, the majority of them are not dangerous and not all of them are carriers of disease. No symptoms of allergic reactions have been observed in people with allergies to silverfish or mites.Moths themselves aren’t dangerous creatures; however, their feces are. Moth feces can spoil food and cocoons of moths can lead to sickness if consumed. These creatures won’t bite (most of them) but their cocoons and feces can cause problems if eaten (ew!). If there is a moth infestation in a home, pest control must be called right away to get rid of moths.Types Of Moth That May BiteThe majority of moth species are harmless to humans. However, there are some species of moths that can cause painful stings. Approximately 150 species of the total 165,000 have the ability to sting. There are 50 caterpillar species living in the U.S. that can cause a piercing sting. The Calyptra moth species, also commonly called the vampire moth, is able to pierce through the skin of fruits with its proboscis (mouthparts). This moth typically feeds upon fruits but can be seen occasionally sucking blood from mammals’ skin or biting people. The Calyptra eustrigata, the Calyptra fasciata, the Calyptra bicolor, the Calyptra fletcheri, the Calyptra canadensis, and the Calyptra albivirgata are some of the Calyptra moth species that can cause stings. If you get bitten by any Calyptra species, do not worry as the sting does not cause any infection or disease. The bitten spot will only be sore for a few hours. There won’t be any serious swelling or itching for long durations. Flannel moth caterpillars as well as Giant silkworm moth’s larvae are also capable of causing a piercing sting. Here at Kidadl, we have carefully created lots of interesting family-friendly facts for everyone to enjoy!
