The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was fought from May 8-21, 1864, around 14 mi (22.53 km) southwest of Fredericksburg, Virginia.The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was a part of the campaign in which the Union army started to push the Confederate Army back to Virginia. This campaign was called the ‘Overland Campaign’ and marked the end of the prime American Civil War in American history.The then US President, Abraham Lincoln, appointed General Grant to lead the Union troops. The Overland Campaign was the brainchild of Grant to destroy Robert Lee’s Army. Grant wanted to destroy Lee’s army. The objective wasn’t Richmond’s Confederate Capital. Grant started this campaign in May and indulged in the Battle of Wilderness with the army of Robert Lee. Both armies suffered many casualties. Instead of retreating, the Union forces went forward to Spotsylvania in the hope of getting between Richmond and the Confederate Army. Later, these two armies met again in Spotsylvania. The Confederate engineers implemented a strategy to dig in the grounds for Confederate soldiers and later wait for the Union army to attack to have a strategic victory in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. Grant’s army planned a major attack on the Confederate Line. They successfully split the army into two. These two armies fought for 20 hours with heavy casualties. Even in the rain, they didn’t stop, and they took part in hand-to-hand combat. This place, which saw the fiercest fight ever, came to be known as the ‘Bloody Angle’. The soldiers of the Confederate Army later fall back to a new defensive line. Lee’s army had a weak point known as the Mule Shoe. Union soldiers tried very hard to push back Lee’s army but were unsuccessful.
