He lived with his parents Elias Disney and Flora Call, three older brothers Raymond, Herbert, Roy, and a younger sister, Ruth. When Walt was only four years old, his family moved to a farmhouse in Marceline, Missouri, and that is where Walt developed a fondness for drawing and painting.Walt Disney’s father was a farmer, carpenter, and building contractor by profession, and his mother was a public school teacher. Having lived in Missouri for four years, Walt’s father abandoned his farming venture and moved to Kansas City. Walt’s father bought a morning newspaper route in Kansas City and compelled his sons to help him deliver papers. Along with helping his father with paper deliveries, Walt Disney continued with his art. He took correspondence cartooning classes and later studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and School of Design. In his early years, Walt Disney also worked on a train, selling newspapers and snacks, and developed a life-long fascination for trains.The Disney family moved back to Chicago in 1917, where Walt took art classes at the Chicago Art Institute. He also kept up with his cartooning study and made drawings for the school newspaper. There was a short hiatus in his progress when Walt Disney joined the Red Cross in the wake of the First World War and worked as an ambulance driver in Germany and France. Walt returned to Kansas City in 1919 and actively pursued a career as an artist. Micky was soon followed by Goofy, Pluto, Donald Duck, and the other classic characters of the Disney franchise. ‘Steamboat Willie’ featuring Micky Mouse was released in 1928 and created quite the sensation for being the first animation film with voice and music. Walt Disney saw further success with releases such as the ‘Silly Symphonies’ cartoon and ‘Flowers and Trees,’ Disney’s first color animated film.Walt Disney then decided to work on the classic fairytale ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ In 1937, Disney’s first full-length animated film ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ was released. It took five years to complete the film. Apart from being a huge box office success, ‘Snow White’ became the top film of 1938. Walt Disney used the profits from ‘Snow White’ to invest in a 51-acre (0.2 sq km) land in Burbank, where he designed a modern studio for the sole purpose of making animated films. The Walt Disney Studios at Burbank became the center of the creation of Disney magic. Notable animated features such as ‘Cinderella,’ ‘Bambi,’ ‘Fantasia,’ ‘Peter Pan,’ and ‘Alice In Wonderland’ were created at the Burbank Studios.The ’40s saw Disney venture into the production of television programs and live-action features. Some early Disney television shows included ‘The Mickey Mouse Club’ and the ‘Davy Crockett’ series. The studio was expanded in the ’50s to include facilities like production craft and sound stages. The Studio stages have had prominent tenants, including ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean I, II, & III’. In addition, the dialogue stage of the studio has witnessed the character voice recording for several animated classics, including ‘Lady and the Tramp,’ ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ ‘Peter Pan,’ ‘The Jungle Book,’ and more recent ones such as ‘The Lion King,’ ‘Aladdin,’ ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame,’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’.Located near Disney’s Burbank Studio is the Feature Animation Building, where Walt Disney was originally planning to create the Mickey Mouse Park. He envisioned a park where people could enjoy a train ride and take pictures with life-like statues of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and other Disney characters. Realizing that transforming his idea into reality would require more space, Walt Disney acquired 200 acres (0.8 sq km) of orange groves in Anaheim, California, the site that would become Disneyland.Disneyland opened in 1955. Disney later planned on building an even larger theme park in Florida.
